Pennsylvania Man Sues Pittsburgh International Airport Over Escalator Injury
A Pennsylvania man recently filed an escalator injury lawsuit against Pittsburgh International Airport and the Allegheny Airport Authority after allegedly suffering a serious knee injury while on a malfunctioning escalator last November. The lawsuit also names Schindler Elevator Corp. as a defendant, a company based in Switzerland with a U.S. headquarters in Morristown, N.J., and seeks compensation for the victim’s hospital bills, medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering from the accident.
According to the escalator accident lawsuit, filed in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, the victim suffered his injury while riding on the escalator down to the people mover trains inside the facility. As the victim was standing on the escalator, one of the stairs on the machine came apart which created an uneven surface and caused the plaintiff to fall to the ground, striking his knee and causing a fracture.
As a result of the serious accident, the victim claims he required two surgeries to correct his medical issues and will likely need at least one more to try and be made whole again. Furthermore, the injury caused the plaintiff to incur lost wages and benefits from his job while recovering from the devastating effects of the incident.
Escalator Injury Lawsuits
While escalators may look like simple, harmless pieces of machinery, the truth is that they are complex and powerful devices that require regular maintenance and inspection to ensure they do not cause harm to innocent people. When escalator manufacturers or property owners fail to take reasonable care to ensure the machines work as they should, the results can be devastating for ordinary people just trying to get from one place to another.
Escalator designers and manufacturers are required by law to conduct rigorous quality control testing to make sure their machines are safe, but often allow dangerous devices to be installed in public spaces despite knowing full well of defects. Other times, property owners do not exercise due caution when inspecting their escalators for flaws or making timely repairs when they become aware of the hazards.
When victims suffer harm from escalator accidents, the results can be serious. Broken bones, lacerations, and even amputation are just some of the catastrophic injuries that can take place as a result of another party’s negligence. In these situations, the law gives personal injury victims the legal rights to hold negligent parties responsible for indifference to public safety by filing escalator injury lawsuits to recover compensation. Escalator accident victims can typically recover money for their hospital bills, future medical expenses, pain and suffering, and the emotional distress of going through the accident and rehabilitation.
